Community Alert August 2008
We have received the following email thread and thought it serious
enough to warn the community.
Just a note to make you aware of weird people who have been
going house to house in our subdivision. My neighbor talked
to them and typed up a flyer for all of the neighbors. She
says:
Yesterday (July 9th) two men were soliciting child
study programs in our subdivision. They said they just
arrived from Estonia three weeks ago and are working with a
universities over t ! here an d here to make people aware of
these programs; they could not name the universities.
They were well versed on all of our New Lenox schools.
They were drawing a map of the subdivision and indicating
which houses did and did not have children and asked for
help on which houses were which. They were definitely more
interested in gaining this information than pushing
information about their programs. The y did not have a
permit to solicit and carried an I.D. that said
"Travel" on it. They spoke with a phony accent
and drove a white minivan. These are con men. I could not
get the license plate but did inform the Will County police.
Please call 911 or the County policy at 815-727-8895 if
you see them. Don't give them information but do take
information so we can figure out what their goal is.
This may be nothing or it could be something. It's
best to be wary.

I called a friend who is a Police Officer in New Lenox to ask if this
was true. At the time I called the officer they were unaware
of this, but told me they would investigate and get back to
me. They called me back today to let me know that while New
Lenox has had no incidents on this, people are aware of this happening
in New Lenox, including people who work at the village hall, though no
one has called the Police Department to file a complaint. The
Officer also called Will County to find out if there have been any
reports of this and Will County confirmed that yes they have but could
not give any statistics on this.
Please pass this one to everyone in the area to alert them.
If someone should come to your door with these types of questions call
the Police immediately. Instruct your children to not answer
the door if they are home alone.

Same guy probably, young guy with blond hair, German type accent came
to my
house Monday saying he was an exchange student gathering information
about
school age children. He would not leave and started getting belligerent.
Finally I walked out of the door and had to get up in his face before he
scurried off. I did not see any other cars but he was definitely creepy
and not
what he said he was. I did not think much about it until I got your
email.
Thanks, I think I might call the cops and report it.

Hi This is very true. Thursday, July 10th this happened to me. A white
male and female came to my door telling me they were from Europe (with
a bad
accent) on a school exchange program to dis! cuss OU R local school
programs
with households of children. I tried to dismiss them, when he started
asking me questions about when I would be home later or tomorrow. I told
him it was not a good time and he grew irritated with me. So I told him
to
get off my property and slammed the door. My girlfriend was over and
followed their Gray Dodge Minivan to get the license plates. The scary
thing is the plates were from Florida!!!! So first of all, how did they
know I had young children??? Secondly, they came from Europe to tell me
about our schools which are minutes from my house. And third, Florida
plates????? Also they didn't have ID tags on.
We called the Mokena police and they are investigating. So please be
aware
and safe.

I am forwarding an email that was sent to me by one of my friends from
Girl Scouts. She lives in Chartwell Downs,
which is just down the street from me.
Our subdivision has already seen many "strangers"
walking around selling things. I just thought I would pass
on this information, it is always best to be prepared.
